10 Truths About Dr. Seuss

Fun Facts About Dr. Seuss

From watching How The Grinch Stole Christmas with your family, to reading The Cat In The Hat to your children, nieces or nephews, almost everyone has connected with the writings of Dr. Seuss at one time or another—and everyone has a different favorite! My personal favorites are Horton Hears A Who (1954) and Oh, The Places You’ll Go! (1990).

…But did you know these TEN TRUTHS about DR. SEUSS?

  1. Dr. Seuss published over 60 children’s books during his lifetime (1904-1991).
  2. In the 1970’s and 80’s, children sent him over 1,000 hand-written fan letters a week!
  3. “Dr. Seuss” is not really a Pen Name: Seuss was Theodor Geisel’s real middle name.
  4. He based his character “The Grinch” on himself (“For 53 years I’ve put up with it now…”)!
  5. Green Eggs and Ham resulted from a bet when Dr. Seuss’s publisher said he “couldn’t write a book using only 50 words”. He won the bet.
  6. Theodor Seuss Geisel began his career as an illustrator and political cartoonist.
  7. Dr. Seuss was Jewish and used his artistic talents to combat Nazi fascism during World War II, working in the U.S. Army’s film department, even winning an Academy Award for his documentary film work in 1947.
  8. Dr. Seuss wore odd hats to overcome his feelings of writer’s block: The Cat In The Hat, only 226 words, took him over a year to write.
  9. His first book was titled Boners (1931), meaning “a silly mistake” back then!
  10. On Dr Seuss’s birthday this year, March 2nd 2021, Dr. Seuss Enterprises announced that “six Dr. Seuss books will no longer be printed”.
