You might be surprised to learn some of your favorite books are censored in the U.S. and worldwide. The American Library Association (ALA) reports 607 materials (books, movies, plays, art displays) were banned in 2019 alone, 56% of them books.
Before a book is banned, it is “Challenged”. Challenges occur primarily in local schools and libraries, prior to being considered nationwide. The ALA states its statistics are only based on what is reported to them and that over 90% of censorship cases, likely more, go unreported—the books are simply taken out of print and quietly removed from library shelves.
Five Great Works Currently (or still) Challenged, Censored, or Banned in the U.S.A in 2021:
The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain (1884)
The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck (1937)
To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee (1960)
Love Letter To America by Yuri Bezmenov (1986)
“Requiem For The American Dream” by Noam Chomsky (Documentary Film, 2015)
